Metal work and mosaics are a passion! They allow me to reflect my love of nature and creativity in a way that is both inspiring and satisfying.
My sculptures are crafted mainly from mild steel and are suitable for both indoors and for the garden. The range and styles of the mosaics are varied, and include mirrors, tiles, pictures and external plaques made from a variety of glazed, glass and unglazed tesserae, as well as household tiles, glass, stones and many other natural mediums.
My work focuses primarily on nature's forms and colours, the main influences being the dynamic organic shapes to be found all around. Designs are taken from all kinds of living and organic things, and pieces are created that hopefully enliven and encourage reflection and inspiration.
The beauty of welding with mild steel is the flexibility of the medium to adapt to new shapes, as well as the patination and fantastic range of colours that result from the heating process. These colours can be frozen in time by applying a coating of clear powder-coating or acrylic spray, giving a matt or shiny finish to a piece. Or, if the metal is left untreated, it will to react to the vagaries of the elements, and will mellow [- it rusts!] and take on an ever changing quality. The character of the piece will develop and evolve, enabling it to blend into its environment, be it in the garden or inside the house.
I am pleased to accept small commissions for either metal or mosaic work. Pieces vary in price depending on scale and complexity, but I am happy to discuss your ideas and requirements.
